Diet plays a big role in controlling the pain caused by GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. Proper diet can make a huge difference to make sure the disease will not impose further pain and damage in your organs. This article will help you cope with this disease through proper diet.

GERD happens when an acid from the stomach that is used to help digest food flows up to the esophagus causing heartburn and chest pain. The lower part of our esophagus has sphincter, a circular band of muscle that works by keeping the acidic juices from the stomach and preventing these acids from flowing up to esophagus.

GERD is caused by many contributing factors and other digestive problems. Stomach may be unable to digest properly, a condition known as gastroparesis.

Also, there are times when the sphincter in the esophagus fails to do its job and allows the acid from flowing its way up. Having too much acidic production inside the stomach also beats the sphincter from keeping the acid inside the stomach and can cause painful burning sensation in the chest and esophagus.

Heartburn caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease is categorized as mild, moderate and severe. A special diet to avoid and control GERD attacks are usually composed of avoiding irritants in the esophagus reflux.

Lowering your food intake is a good jumpstart for a GERD diet, because when you eat too much and you are overly stuffed, your stomach will certainly have hard time digesting the food you ingested. Overly stuffed can lead the food to mix with high fat and grease in the stomach which will then lead to painful acid reflux.

Avoid greasy and fatty foods and eat foods in lower fat content instead. Also, it can be helpful if you eat in small portion of healthy foods, you can use a small plate to make it look like you are having enough in your table. This can be a good strategy to not overstuff your stomach with food.

For better gastroesophageal reflux disease control, it would be wise if you avoid spicy foods. Spice and chili can trigger the attack of GERD by inflaming your esophagus. This will irritate your esophagus causing severe pain that will last for a while.

Also, avoid eating too much chocolate, as it can contribute in the development of acid reflux condition.

Coffee is one of leading irritants of this disease for some people. Coffee, whether it is caffeinated or decaf can still cause acid reflux. This may not trigger everyone’s GERD though.

Avoid taking carbonated beverages such as soft drinks as it can help increase the acidity in your stomach.

Tomato products and fruits of citrus are healthy foods, but when you have GERD, it will be better if you avoid these foods, as it can strike a lot of acid in your stomach causing painful heartburn for hours.

In breakfast, you can skip your orange juice and have a bowl of whole-grain cereal foods instead of fried foods. A banana is also a good part of GERD diet.

In lunchtime, eating foods that are high in protein such as lunch meat with low-calorie mayonnaise is a healthy way to avoid attacks. Accompany your meal with wheat bread for some to have some healthy carbohydrates.
